Environment Agency have commissioned a design & built contractor (ECS Engineering) for Kiora footbridge replacement. Based on our assessments, the existing Timber Footbridge at Kiora is in bad state of repair and deemed unsafe for the public use. Environment Agency is now looking for the replacement of the bridge superstructure, mainly the beams, deck boards and hand rails. Kiora footbridge serves only as a public footway access. The footbridge is a two span timber structure supported on concrete abutments and a central concrete pier. Overall the footbridge has 21 meter span length. Based on historic information and qualitative assessments, it is believed that the existing abutment, foundation and middle pier are fit to accommodate the new bridge loading. However, the contractor is also expected to investigate and assess the supporting structure to make sure they are suitable and structurally stable. As a long term solution, the Environment Agency proposed the use of FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) bridge deck on P4 type parapet hand railing. This solution will provide a much longer life span as compared to the timber deck bridge and has minimal maintenance need over the life span. We have also made some provision for disabled access by incorporating 20% sloping ramps at both ends of the bridge. Due to the apparent public safety risks, the bridge replacement is planned in October- Nov 2016. The replacement bridge visualisation and method statement is available.
